Description: Organ Grinder Lola is thrilled to participate again at the Rockville Science Day! Free family fun & exploring! Find out more at: www.RockvilleScienceCenter.org For (how many?) years, I have been invited to demonstrate not just the beauty of historic German street music, but also the science of music-making, sound production, and data storage. Yes, binary code was developed in the late 1700s, and paper rolls, cardboard plates, metal panes were all used to store information, which made industrial manufacturing possible, think about the mechanized weaving looms. This ushered in the Great Industrial Revolution, creating mass-production of items that, until then, took each individual worker's time and skill on each single product. Wow, what you read about in a history book, I will bring to life right in front of you: through my beautiful Drehorgel "Scharmanka," my hand-crafted street organ. My mother, who's still living in my old hometown in Germany, had gifted me her Drehorgel, with the obligation, that I bring this almost-forgotten folk art to the new country. -- Well at the Science Fair, at parties, school events, and at Oktoberfests, we are a hit, and I've been bringing so much music to kids and grownups alike. Come and join us at this free outdoors family fun event, where there are close to a hundred different science exhibits, hands-on projects, and stuff you can take home with you.
